Paper Number 3

I'm not gonna lie, there is a part of me that is very intimidated by this upcoming assignment. I'm always intimidated by papers, and this is going to be the longest one I've come across thus far in my collegiate experience. Infact, other than a few screenplays and one creative writing assignment back in high school, this may end up being the longest written work I’ve ever done, which would be lovely, if I had a solid idea of what I was going to write it about.

I have a few ideas that have come to me over the course of this class as possible topics for the final paper. The first would be to continue the ideas I’m exploring in my World War Z paper. With this one I have a clear jumping off point (my initial paper) and there is near infinite information out there about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for me to write about.

A second idea that came to me today in class would be to write my paper on the College Phenomenon that is Humans Vs. Zombies. I could interview members of Shepherd’s Active Gaming Club, Faculty and possibly SUPD and get first hand accounts of how the game is handled here, and then research if there have been incidents at other schools related to the game. While it may be harder to find sources for this topic, it could also lead to a very unique paper.

My final idea is one that came up earlier in the course, and that would be the film The Blob, which has always been a favorite of mine. While The Blob is not a zombie film, the monster that is the Blob shares much in common with zombies, such as being brainless, slow moving, and doing nothing but consume people. The Blob is often seen as a metaphor for the red scare, so it could be an interesting research topic.

So there are a few of my ideas. Let me know which ones you guys think could work!

  1. I like all your ideas, Austin. I also think that I may expand upon my idea of sexism in these movie genres (as I'm doing with my current essay), because for some reason it has really started to peak my interest, and the words flow naturally. I'm not sure if our other classmates feel this way, but I imagine that starting on a new paper with some elements of the topic from our old one would make for a smooth transition. Humans vs. Zombies would also be a great paper to write, but you may need to work a lot more at gathering content for it. How many other schools do this activity? Have any of the activities ended badly? Stuff like that would be easy to go off of if the info is out there, but I'm not sure if it is or not? Last but not least, your movie choice : I think it may be easier to go off of an actual zombie film instead of a type of metaphor, just my opinion. Also, I haven't seen the paper requirements yet, so that may help you to narrow down a topic. In my opinion, I would say: my number one is World War Z paper expansion, then Zombies vs. Humans, then Blob.

    1. Speaking of sexism in movie genres, check this out. Earlier this year (or maybe it was last year) there was an announcement that an all female ghostbusters reboot was in the works. Now the studio has announced ANOTHER ghostbusters reboot with an all male cast.
