Mindlessness vs. Mindfulness

As I mentioned in my last post about stress, I attended meditation for the first time last Monday. Well, first I'd like to talk about how great and stress relieving it was. I am going the Monday after spring break again and attending weekly. I recommend it to everyone, it was a great experience. In the class, our instructor spoke about meditation and how important it is for our emotional health and how it keeps us mindful. Relating back to our zombie theme, it's known that zombies are mindless. We've reviewed in class how society is turning into zombies. While it could be from relying on our technologies, or while going through an everyday routine. Well I related this to the lesson I learned while meditating. In order to stay mindful, we must appreciate the present. Awareness and mindfulness is such a valuable trait to possess, it keeps us from becoming mindless zombies. Living in the moment rather than shoving our face in our phones is a change that needs to be made. Even if only being observant or really listening to the people around you and the stories they tel us daily, it is a step away from our mindless everyday routines and towards a mindful and appreciative future.

  1. I have to agree Leah, that "awareness and mindfulness" are valuable to have as well as the fact tat we need to start communicating with people better and stop "shoving our faces in our phones". I've never tried meditation, but I think it sounds like it is actually very relaxing and helpful. I just think that it would be really hard to stop my mind from going 100 places at one time for even a second though.

  2. I appreciate your words on mindfulness Leah. I personally try to see the best in people, even when it seems hard to find. Plus being mindful allows a breather in stressful situations. I am unable to do Mediation Mondays this semester because of lab, do you know if they have it in the fall?

  3. Meditation isn't something I have tried before....In my experience, at times it could be quite difficult to focus on the present. Society has taught us to focus on the future and what is going to happen next. We live in a fast paced world where it is rare for one to "stop and smell the roses." Maybe I'll try meditation to see if it will help me focus on now instead of what is next.

  4. Leah I love this post! possibly creating a paper on this topic may be helpful for you!!! I love meditation, and when I dont get to go the class I have learned to meditate on my own. Through coloring, singing, resting, or just listening. It really can help the "Zombies" could really use this to become alive again! Again, great post!!
