So, I just saw Dr. Harahan’s comment on Austin’s post “Zombies
Everywhere” about the zombie cat. I guess everyone talked about him in class
one day (that I wasn’t there). I have become very interested in it, and I ran
into an article about the battle for custody of this pet. The owner is trying
to get his buddy back from the humane society, which seems to be using Bart
(the zombie cat) for funding. Now, I sound pretty bias but I feel like it was
an accident and the owner was just in shock of it all happening in the first
place.
Now,
the reason I am so intrigued by this story is for two reasons: One, I
absolutely LOVE cats and Two, I used to fund the humane society for a long
time. I just recently stopped funding because I found out that they do not use
the funding for what they should be using it for. They use the donations to
fund advertising and paper, they are not using it to help the animals that they
say they are.
I am a huge advocate for donating to a great cause, but
sadly many misuse those ideals of people and use the money for their own gain.
Anyways, with all of this being said, I will attach the
article about Bart and the custody battle for him. But I also want to attach a
truly helpful foundation to look into. There is a foundation called “the big
cat sanctuary” they help tigers, cheetahs, cougars, lions, and other big cats
who are injured, just out of captivity, or are orphaned. After they are to
optimal health they are sent back into the wild to live their lives happily.
They also have a Vine to keep everyone updated on these big babies. They really
are a great bunch of people!
So anyways, I just wanted to put my few words in! I hope
everyone has a great weekend!

And here is Baby Bart!
I literally JUST read an article on how the owner is trying to get the cat back, but the shelter won't allow the owner to take him. I don't ever think that someone would just take the time to bury an animal alive. If someone is that awful, why wouldn't you just kill it first and save the trouble? Shelters that advertise in this way give others a bad name. I also think that an intense amount of medical treatment/funding wouldn't entirely be necessary for this cat. Yes, zombie cat is a fighter, but I don't think the life span will be much longer based off its poor condition. I bet zombie cat will be pampered for the rest of its time on earth!
ReplyDeleteI get what you're saying about not wanting to donate to the humane society as the money contributed doesn't go directly to helping the animals. I'm a huge fan of supporting local animal organizations. Myself and other members of my family have donated our time and money to the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association, a no kill shelter in my hometown of Charleston. I'm not sure if there's a similar organization around here (I have no car or job at the moment so I don't have a way to seek them out, or really contribute financially).

ReplyDeleteI hurt seeing these animals being bid upon; I rescued a dog and the guidelines were unbelievable.Ex: I found some puppies nine miles from paw paw,wv and brought them with me to winchester,va. The shelter there did not allow any animals outside there county.ASPCA. Dedicated as they are, I could only feed them twice, hoping there mom would not reject them again as the ASPCA did. Animal shelters saying no when they get help from the community including me, because I frequent, shows hateful standards and regulations just like other humane society like the county I live in,MORGAN.
ReplyDeleteMy dog is a rescue and I witnessed a bidding war on the dog I came to love. The shouting probably did not help-other applicant- The fact was we were there to love our new dog willow even if there was a bid or not. We did pay for her ,but, I think of her as a Dietrich-McGinnis, and so do my babies. I believe in them I wish they would believe in us(human nature).
I do think that spending money on advertising is very important for the humane shelters. It has started a very successful campaign to get people to stop buying from breeders and go to the shelter. They also promote that most dogs are purebred and not mutts and make great pets. But I understand feeling slighted by an organization that doesn't do what you expect them to do with your donations. Which is why I don't support goodwill.
ReplyDeleteIt is most defiantly wrong that they wouldn't just give the owner back his cat. I agree with Laura, I don't think that anyone would intentionally bury an animal. The cat looks like a zombie in the picture, and being hit by a car, which is much larger than it, would probably make anyone assume that the cat was dead. I think the shelter should have to give the animal back. I also agree that the money should go to more than just advertising, but I think Meghan is also right, because advertising gets the community involved and the animals that need to be adopted out there.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Crystal, I most definitely think the shelter should give the animal back. It's unfair to the owners they obviously didn't know the cat was alive. Also, as Meghan said, I do agree that advertisement is an important part however I could understand why you would feel misinformed if they are advertising that your contributions are for animal care. My grandmother donates to the humane society in her town however she donated things like food, towels, any supplies the animals would need.
