Today
I was enjoying one of my favorite parts of my daily routine, watching last
night's episode of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. He was
doing a segment on the recent measles outbreaks, and worked in a fairly well
thought out analogy, comparing the measles outbreak to a scenario involving
zombies. I won’t tell the entire joke so I won’t ruin it for anyone who hasn’t
seen the episode, but it got me thinking.
Zombies really are everywhere. I don’t
mean real zombies, but they’ve managed to infiltrate almost all aspects of our
culture. I think a big reason for this is that it’s such a simple, yet
fascinating concept that it can be applied to all kinds of concepts and
problems. I would have never thought to compare a current event, like the
measles outbreaks, to zombies, but when Stewart does it, not only does it make
sense, but also it is hilarious. So my question to you all in the comments is, where have you seen a zombie reference in something you weren't expecting it recently?
Hmm... I can't think of anything at the moment that I've recently heard relating to zombies. I recently discovered (and posted about earlier) the correlation between being a zombie and following into a cult, or awful religion such as the one Jim Jones created. It's sort of like being a blind follower and not thinking for ones self that truly shows being brain dead.
ReplyDeleteI saw this segment, too, Austin, and it caught my attention. The measles vaccine debate also came up in a couple of the conferences I had with you guys, today. This is certainly an interesting connection.
ReplyDeleteThe only other surprising place I've seen the "zombie thing" come up lately (at least that springs to mind at the moment) is the "zombie cat" story we talked about in class last week. Don't google that story if you aren't familiar with it: the cat is still alive (yay!) but the real story is even more depressing than it sounds. (Hmmm...now I wonder how many of you will get to googling *because* of what I just wrote!)
I looked up the zombie cat, and I must say that it is hideously adorable. Any cat that digs its way out of its own grave deserves pampering for the rest of its life!
ReplyDeleteWell, I want to start by saying I agree with this post 100%. Zombies are used as a blank slate in today's society to mold to whatever the topic may be. However, to answer your question I actually recently saw a video in which Bill Gates compares computer programming to zombies. I found this a little unusual. If you google this you can find the video.

ReplyDeleteThanks Austin for mentioning Jon Stewart's broadcast, I thought his sense of humor was very entertaining/hilarious. I did Google (reference zombies= true news 2015), the story related to the predictions of the Mayan calender and Nostradamus. The article mentions a redo, for the end of the world predictions. Zombie viruses being created to finish a text that most could appreciate (Nostradamus' predictions). I enjoyed this article... hope you guys check it out....
