So I know that zombie
content isn't a "requirement" for a blog post, but I like using it as
a guiding theme. It gives me something to think about throughout the week, see
where I can see zombies in my everyday life, or at least something that reminds
me of zombies. If I was seeing actual zombies in my everyday life I'd be a bit
concerned.
Valentines Day is upon us, and so I’ve
decided to try and merge the zombie theme with a Valentines theme. There are a
few directions I could take this. The first would be the plethora of Zombie
themed valentines I’ve seen online recently. Here are a few of my favorites.
But I think that’s a bit weak. There’s
another kind of mindless consumption going on around February 14th,
and that is the mindless consumption of goods. Now, I’m not saying that there’s
anything wrong with buying gifts for your loved ones, but at a certain point it
gets to be a bit too much. I worked at one of the larger shopping centers in
Charleston before coming out here, and other than Black Friday (don’t get me
started on that one) the Saturday before Valentine’s Day was a day when we
could count on the worst traffic of the year. I remember there was one year my
mother was shopping at the store across from mine that weekend and she got
stuck in her parking spot for over an hour. While I’m all for showing love…isn’t
this a bit too much?
I absolutely detest Black Friday & certain days that take away time from others, especially on a day like Thanksgiving. I absolutely love Valentine's Day because it's all about love, and I don't take it as a couple's holiday, I take it as a day where I should tell everyone whom I love that they're important to me. Of course, I do still celebrate the tradition with Japanese food & oddities. This year I'm getting a framed bat! Woo! I guess the problem with holidays like these is that there's always the notion that you must follow a trend: get chocolates, flowers, and a teddy bear. I prefer to take days like these and make them into something that individuals will like instead of following the norm. Loved the post Austin! I was hoping someone would post something Valentine's related.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you austin! The only reason I detest "Holidays" is because of all of the importance placed around buying things! Its ridiculous. I am wiccan, which means I don't really participate in these holidays, but I do have to deal with them, since I work at foodlion. I totally agree that we should show love to our significant others but... shouldn't that be EVERYDAY?????? just an idea. Anywho, great post! I love the V-day cards :P
ReplyDeleteThose Valentine's Day zombie related valentines are interesting. I enjoyed the first one the most. I think that you are completely right. I don't think there is anything wrong with the holiday, and I think it is a great way to show someone you love them, but I think it has become more of a gift giving day, like you are saying, than a day where you actually show your loved ones you love them. A card and some chocolate should be more than enough for a Valentine's Day gift unless the person buying wants to buy something bigger. It shouldn't be something that is expected though. Love isn't something you can give with gifts. They are nice to receive, but if someone is offering you there love, isn't that a big enough gift?
ReplyDeleteI have always disliked Valentine's day because it is in remembrance of the massacre of St. Valentine. I understand that it is considered romantic because he died because of who he married. Yes, dying for the one you love is a sweet idea, but I consider it unrealistic and illogical. I have yet to comprehend the point of putting one day to show your love to someone, when you should show it everyday.
ReplyDeleteI hate valentines day, I actually despise it.
ReplyDeleteI simply do not understand why we set a day in the year to be romantic. Should you not love your significant other at all times Zombie related?Absolutely! We run through our lives from one thing to another without significant thought. Just like a zombie, stumble around without a purpose.
We make holidays into what they are, and then they are further molded by society. I just prefer it to be an extra special day to show everyone who you love that they are important to you. I got my family treats from the Sweet Shop in town, painted my godfather a picture, bought all my farm animals extra treats & got my boyfriend some oddities. If you don't even celebrate the day, then at least just think about sending your mom or dad an, "I love you & miss ya!" text. We have so much to be grateful for.
