For some reason I find great solace in being able to write
to an audience, and I’m going to use and abuse the blog posts for as long as I
have them. I absolutely encourage you to do the same.
So, there was some conversation today about people’s parents, and I would absolutely love to know more about your guys’ parents. Who doesn’t love to brag about where they came from, or a family member that you look up to?
I’ll start. Please put your comments below! I want to see them! It can be your parents or a family member that you adore.

I’m going to first start off with my father, Thomas Knock.
My father began working in Arlington about twenty six years ago as a cop. He
started at the very bottom and worked his way up to the top. Not only is this
man the MacGyver of the jail, but he’s also quite the escape artist. He makes
all of the websites, fixes anything technical, is a professional published
photographer, is the main man for hostage negotiation/extreme emergencies, and was
in 9/11 as well as the man who decided what was released to the press.
The neat thing about my father and my family is all the high profile cases and interesting things he got to do. For one, he would transport people to death row like the South Side Strangler.

Also, he’s not the only person in my family that works for
the government.
My grandfather was in the FBI (a lot of the work is desk work, but he was actually out in the field), my uncle was in the FBI for field work, my families long time family friend (Jeff) is in law enforcement, my other uncle is a cop, and most recently my brother in law is in swat and works in DC.
The reason why I named off most of these people is because there’s an exciting situation involved. Since my father, my uncle Drew, and family friend Jeff are the top men in their department, they are often sent to far out places as guinea pigs for maximum security prisons.

These three guys weren’t sent to Las Vegas and put in the
most absolute secure part of the prison, locked up, and were instructed to
break out - each in separate sections. Within fifteen minutes they had broken
out of every part of the prison, and interrupted a meeting about how secure
their prison was. Still makes me laugh to think about.
It was always nice to have such a technologically advanced
dad, as well as having someone to create such a safe home.
Just last week he turned an xbox into a body scanner so he
taking 3D photos and print them with his 3D printer to make as models. These
are the things he thinks up on his two to three hour drive home.
My father is absolutely where my fascination for gore and crime came from. Thank my dad for making me odd!
Now, when it comes to my mother… she is just such a peach. I can’t stand how adorable she is. You know how you have one of those people in your lives that just pull at your heart strings? That would be my mother. I can’t complain about my childhood for a second because she made every moment count. I CAN blame her for making me addicted to books, because she would read to me every single night.
The reason why we have the farm that we do is because my great grandmother was Jenny McCoy. Yes, I am very strongly a McCoy AND Italian, haha. I have all the photographs, family bible, and birth certificates as well as death certificates. They’ll probably be worth something some day.
Anyhow, we inherited hundreds of acres of land thus the reason we have the farm. The interesting thing is that the farm is on land where the Civil War was. There’s a foundation of an old brick cabin a couple acres back from my house where I found a harmonica while metal detecting with my father.
Overall, my parents have made for a fabulous life and I have everything to thank them for, especially for how I was raised.

Who made YOU who you are?
Below is a photo from when my father picked up my English Angora who could only be bought in DC. He convinced everyone that he was the new mascot. Haha!
Thank you for sharing that. It is wonderful to know more about the people around me. It makes the learning environment pleasent.
ReplyDeleteMy dad made me who I am.
He was in the Navy for 20 years. He retired in 2003. I had a complicated childhood. I was born during operation "just cause" and I spent a large portion of my childhood in Panama.
The country was still considered a warzone and hostile area for a long time after the initial invasion.
We moved to the U.S in 1998 and we lived in GA.
After my dads retirement he was hired by a private contractor for the Goverment and he deployed to Iraq in 2004.
My dad inspires me to alwaya push myself to be a better man, to make a difference, and change my little area of the world,to make it a better place. I really belive that the small things matter.
it leads to steps, steps to make a big change. To make a difference.
An interesting post that should draw some good responses! Laura: your dad sounds so fascinating. I bet he has some great stories. Your mom sounds great, too.
ReplyDeleteJeffery: I bet your dad also has some great stories! It's interesting to see how your parents really do shape you.
My parents are pretty cool, even though they aren't super-cops/spies/jail-breakers or soldiers. My mom is a retired nurse, who worked for many years in a psychiatric hospital. (Talk about stories one could tell!) My dad works in banking. He is pretty darn good at it, but is (finally) looking at retirement.
