Snow Day Post: Narratives and the "Pick Two" Assignment

If we had a regular class meeting today, we would have spent a lot of time talking about writing narratives and how to do so successfully for the essays you are working on. One point I would have made is that these narratives should be non-fiction (I know I was a bit wishy-washy on that before). In other words, don't make stuff up.

Are any of you thinking about a narrative option? If so, tell us about it in the comments.

  1. I'm not particularly thinking about a narrative option, just because of how difficult it would be to incorporate with the text that I am using, which is a zombie documentary. I'm glad I didn't start writing it, because I think it would be very difficult with this essay and making it non-fiction especially. I'm interested to see someone who is taking the narrative prompt for this essay, and just exactly how they'll do it. I'm also assuming there will be a lot of analysis, reports, and reviews. We'll see!

  2. I agree with Laura. I thought that it might be interesting to do a narrative on the movie I chose, but then I thought it would be rather difficult. The only thing I kept thinking about was what Dr. Hanrahan said about it being how you reacted to it. So I thought maybe I could just right about how I felt about it and what I liked about it, but the ideas that I had in mind were just too similar to a review instead of a narrative. I think later on in the semester it might be easier or a good genre to utilize, but for this particular assignment, I just don’t think it would be wise since I’m not confident in that genre for this particular assignment. I also agree with Laura that it would be interesting to see how someone might do this genre for this assignment, but it’s just not a good decision for me personally.

  3. Much like Laura I'm probably not going to do the narrative essay. I do think it would be an interesting thought exercise to write about how I would write a narrative essay on my source material. There are two ways I could see myself doing it. The source material I'm hoping to use is "School Girl Zombies From Hell High," A Musical by Dan Kehde and Mark Scarpelli. The first would be to try and interview the writer, composer, and possibly a few members of the cast or crew and write a narrative about the process of bringing the piece to the stage. The second way I could write this essay as a narrative would be to write about the night I went to see the production this fall.

  4. I had mentioned that I would like to produce an interview, which would be narrative and voicing someone's words other than my own. This is taking some thought, but, I have an outline which involves comparison between myself and anonymous. I see it becoming interesting when the two converge.
