Snow Day Post: "Literacy: A Lineage"

Read over Melanie Luken's narrative, beginning on page 132. Using the list of characteristic features of a narrative provided on page 108, evaluate her narrative. Where do you see her making sure her narrative hits those marks? What does she do quite well? Do not focus on what you didn't like: we are focusing on strengths here.

  1. Melanie Luken makes a particularly powerful narrative by the use of descriptive language, and chronological events. She starts her personal tale by describing how she came to love books, and how her father largely contributed to it. She takes us step by step as to how she is where she is today, due to her upbringing and the things that her nurtured environment as a child taught her, even though her father is now declining. The most powerful part about her narrative is the descriptive language that she uses, where she actually puts you into the story, showing you that she read in the park, and still goes back to hear the bells chime.
Her most powerful asset is definitely the way she describes things. Extremely well done!

  2. I agree with Laura, Melanie Luken really has a knack for descriptive writing. Personally, my favorite part of her narrative was when she included the poem written on the bottom of the bell tower. This not only went along with her literary theme but gave the readers an idea of just how often she went on her Sunday afternoon bike rides with her inspiring father. After including the poem in her narrative she then went on to elaborate on it. I found that thorough Luken's narrative she gave examples and referred back to her fathers influence effectively to make her point. Her father passed on a love of literature to her which she is eternally grateful for. Her description throughout the narrative spoke volumes allowing you to feel the love her father had for literature, the love she inherited. I feel like Luken made the story come alive when mentioning all of her childhood memories which incorporated literature in one way or another. Her point was made clear and I think she did an excellent job!

  3. I LOVED this story!!! It really made me want to have a dad like hers! i really love that Melanie kept up with a time line, especially in a since of reminiscence. Just as Leah noticed, I loved the poem right in the middle of melanie's narrative. This i believe makes a strong point (as does all of the poetic references throughout the story). I also like that the poems created a very personal and creative writing feel to the article, it felt homey. I felt like I was sitting with Melanie under the bell tower and she was explaining her relationship with her father. again, I loved this essay!
