After reading Chapter 9 in the book and learning more
about analysis, I decided it couldn’t hurt to include an analysis link for you
guys to read. I also decided this would be a helpful idea because I realized a
lot of us are using analysis for our two genre essays and I wanted to share
this useful analysis I found online about what better than the topic we’ve been
discussing.. ZOMBIES. This post is similar to the articles we have been reading
in class. It raises the question as the first article we read by Sirota, “What’s
With All the Zombies?” Well this one is called, “Why We’re Obsessed with the
Zombie Apocalypse” This is a brief analysis but it raises the question what is
the deal with zombies? I also wanted you guys to read it because I am going to somehow
link it to my analysis for the two genre essay as well. Well anyways, here’s
the link: http://m.livescience.com/27287-zombie-apocalypse-world-war-ii.html
In this article,
Stephanie Pappas suggested that this spike in popularity, “may trace back to an
unexpected source”. In the article, she suggested that zombies may actually be
helping us with the aftermath of World War II. She then referenced Vindergar, a
doctoral student in comparative literature. Vindegar mentioned the shows, “The
Walking Dead and 28 Weeks Later” saying society enjoys these zombie survival films
because we want to see how they’d act in a “survivalist situation”. Vindegar
also suggested that “zombies are important as a reflection of ourselves”. I
found this incredibly interesting because this is the claim people have made
the entire time, including myself. Humans are drawn to zombies because they are
in fact a reflection of what the human race has potential to become. Zombies are
mindless beings which were once living, breathing humans. This theory is one of
the many that claims responsibility for striking an interest in the zombie flicks
in society presently. Vindegar then went on to say, “Even as a society we have
lost a lot of our belief in a positive future and instead have more of an idea
of a disaster to come, we still think that we are survivors, we still want to
believe that we would survive.” I find this quote interesting as well, watching
these films and series and watching these people have no choice but to survive
gives us humans hope if we are in fact fearing a disastrous future. While
watching these zombie films we imagine ourselves surviving in this situation.
What things would we do differently? What techniques would we use? I will validate
my point because in our last assigned article, “What Don’t People Do In Zombie Apocalypse
Movies That You Would Do?” by Williams. This article effectively displays that
in our society, we have thought about techniques in which we would survive. These
zombie movies are pulling on our instinctive behaviors and techniques we would
use if we were in the shoes of these characters. Essentially, if our society is
fearing disaster, watching zombie apocalyptic films in which survival is the
main goal would help cope with this fear.
So, here's my question for you guys: What is a technique (or multiple techniques) you would use (given our current knowledge of zombies) to help survive a zombie apocalypse?
I have to say, I agree with the article in some ways. Although the suggestion that zombies where created as a way for people to cope with WWII is a little out of my reach, I do however agree that we as a society believe that one day it will all end. I know i think that, and what better way to pass the time then to conjure up ways we could survive the end of days. Zombies fit the role.
ReplyDeleteAs for survival, You can find me deep in the woods of WV in a cabin with a big pet bear as my companion and an unlimited amount of bacon; and macaroni and cheese.Oh, and Don't forget the cellar that I have packed with food, and tools, and whiskey! OK; so I am joking, but hey at least its a start.
I would carry with me at all times, assuming we are a mobile:
1. A damn good knife. At least 6'' in length.
2. A light source, and water proof matches.
3. A rather large machete, to chop the unholy dead into bits of meat.
4. My body armor, because people suck in the apocalypse and will try to kill me.
5. Guns and Ammo for said people trying to kill me.
6. MREs ( Meals ready to eat).
7. A life straw, and 1 metal pot.
The first thing I would do in order to escape or survive a zombie apocalypse is to get a pilot and a plane or a cruise ship and a captain to the nearest island. After the zombies have been all killed on the island, it's a matter of a waiting game or restarting life. I never understood staying in the states or staying on any large land mass. I'd probably bring as many non-perishable food items as possible with me along with a reusable weapon such as a metal bat, and a gun with many bullets or an axe.
ReplyDeleteLaurs Knock, are you familiar with the game dead island? I would recommend checking that out. They game is based on zombies on island. From what the video game suggests, the island option is difficult due to lack of resources.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm not familiar with the game dead island but Laura's island suggestion was my first thought as well. My initial thought would be to flee to an island and kill them off like you suggested. However, I guess I'll need to check out this game now haha
ReplyDeleteDixon, I haven't heard of that game but I'll definitely check it out. It would make sense that an island would be the first place everyone would go. You'd just have to find the right people to take with!
ReplyDeleteThe other question I ask, is what is really more Dangerous? The undead horde, or the other survivors? It seems to me in every scenario the initial danger is the dead, but I believe the greater danger lies in the other man. Sure you could kill all the zombies off, but then you are clashing with people over scarce resources. The darker side of human nature comes out. We begin lie, cheat, steal, whatever it takes to survive. We all have it in us, it takes a terrible situation to bring it out, but it does exist.
ReplyDeletePeople are more dangerous then the zombie. Zombies are animalistic in nature, people on the other hand are deceptive and have personal motives, whatever they may be.
I would find a self sustaining farm (livestock, wells, generators, a few silos) and reinforce the fencing. I would make sure to have multiple dogs for alert purposes and have a vast supply of ammo and guns. I would also attempt to surround the farm with spikes that would make it difficult for a horde to easily pass my fencing systems. I would aim for it to be located in the south where I would not have to contend with cold winters. I would install bars on the windows to ensure that zombies would not be able to breach my house.
ReplyDeleteI would also attempt to find a doctor, engineer, mechanic and others who would prove beneficial to my survival. Also a good mix of men to women to repopulate after the outbreak is controlled.
