7 Scientific Reasons a Zombie Outbreak Would Fail
This meme is for the last reason on the article. As I have continued with the show (almost on season 3 now!) I can't help but notice all the improbabilities that happen on the show.
My biggest problem with the theory of a zombie outbreak is the lack of decay that the zombies have. As the article explains, if there was a zombie outbreak somewhere in the deep south like Atlanta (I'm looking at you Walking Dead) the zombies would decay at such a rate in the heat that their limbs would not be able to support their movement. I thought of arguments to this reasoning, maybe the blood flowing through them keeps the body from decaying like a normal dead body, but this would also mean that normal fatal blows to the body would be sufficient to kill the zombies.
But that leads to a more important question. Why do reasonable people accept zombies as entertainment when there is no way that it could ever occur? While as a class we have read articles that suggest that it is because it allows a release of anger and satisfies gore that comes from social-political situations that is not normally accepted in society. This is the main reason why gun targets have made a drastic switch from human silhouettes to zombies. Humans don't feel as guilty shooting something that isn't alive.
This brings me to my main point. Last night I watched the "Nebraska" episode of the Walking Dead. *******SPOILER ALERT*************
Herschel kept the members of his family that had turned in his barn. He fed them and held out hope for a cure to be found. Why is it acceptable for society that we shoot zombies? Zombies that look like humans because they were humans? How is it any different, since we know that zombies can't really exist, for people to accept the gory killings?
You make some valid points here. I know exactly which episode you are talking about! I think it's acceptable that we shoot zombies because they are seen as no longer human, the survival aspect, and then kind of along the lines of what Hindenburg-Dracula said in his post about how it could be considered you getting rid of the bad parts of your past. But, with that being said, it is hard because they were human and you seem them as they were before they were the living dead.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you Meghan. I think it's kind of crazy that zombies are even a thing. I am kind of annoying when it comes to watching a movie or show about zombies just because it just isn't realistic at all. I think the zombie is just a way to get around promoting violence toward humans... since zombies are seen as no longer "human" which is stupid, in my opinion
ReplyDeleteYou have a good point. I always go along with the "they're not really people" argument, and that argument would be valid if zombies were real, but they're not. I don't know how that became so engrained in our conscience.
ReplyDeleteThe show's creators are addressing (a bit) the decay factor, by making the zombies look, well, more disgusting as time moves by. But probably not enough. The other answer (that doesn't do enough to explain the criticism, but does something...) is that new zombie keep getting made.
ReplyDeleteI am also drawn to Sabrina's idea that the zombie fad is, for some people/in some ways, about getting to do violence to a human form, even if it's not technically a human anymore. I find that disturbing, but it makes sense psychologically.
Gross, not really, love the picture. I enjoy zombies, but the gore is what I prefer in horror flick's. As you mentioned, "This is the main reason why gun targets have made a drastic switch from human silhouettes to zombies", as Meghan said.It can relate to how comfortable are you with shooting a human. I appreciate our country's military, and wander why do they feed the masses this. I tried to research a ratio of military and civilians on the usa.gov site and my result were:

I feel this would help your argument Meghan and give easier incite on your matter.
